Habitat:Semiarid and arid grasslands, deserts, plains Diet:Herbivore: thorns, dry vegetation, saltbrush Reproduction:Female camels breed every other year during any season. Apart from the herd, they give birth to a single calf after a gestation period of 365-440 days. Once the calf is able to walk, it and its mother rejoin the herd. Weaning takes place at one year of age. Behavior:During a sandstorm, a camel can close its nostrils to keep out the flying dust. Status:No special status Interesting Facts:The camel is believed to have been domesticated as early as 4000 BC and is used as a beast of burden or for riding. Camels are highly adapted to desert living, capable of going long periods without water.
